Target audience

After doing some research on websites such as http://uktribes.com, I have found information about different types of people in the country, known on there as 'tribes'. The tribe that links into Kerrang magazine and the magazine I will be making is the Metalheads tribe. The introduction to the tribe is said to be:
"An enduring tribe consisting of those into metal, heavy rock and a bit of old school punk. Damnation, Download and the Carling (Reading and Leeds) festivals are popular destinations for members of this tribe – as are most opportunities for violent slam dancing in big, sweaty arenas."
Uk tribes has lots of useful information that I could use to help me plan my magazine, such as it has listed the brands that Metalheads have, and the tribe icons.
The brands are things like Harley Davidson, Relentless, Metal Hammer, Jack Daniels, Marshall and Vans. This can help me establish the looks and opinions of metalheads, which will help me aim the magazine at them. Metal
heads are said to wear: "You’ll mainly see them wearing black, though not exclusively. A black band t-shirt and blue pair of jeans would be the typical look of a Metalhead."
Their icons are said to be Metallica, Dita Von Teese, Lemmy, Dani Filth, Five Finger Death Punch. All of these are bands/artists.

Q inside

There are 162 pages, almost 100 more than Kerrang.
37 of them are adverts, which is almost 23%.

Ther are many different types of advert in Q since there is such a wide range of people who read it. There seems to be a lot of technology advertised, in various forms, such as mobile phones, games, CDs, and even Iphone apps. There is less music clothing advertised in Q unlike Kerrang, both both magazines advertise upcoming gigs very well, with pages dedicated to advertising gigs in both magazines.

Q is mainly split up into two sections, features and regulars. the features are sections that arent in the magazine every month, such as the big interviews and cover stories. the regulars speaks for itself, they are regular, and appear every month.
Q has a section for advertorials, called Q promotion. They make an article for a product, in this case, russian vodka.

The magazine achives a house style by having the same font, colours and style the whole way through. On most pages is a Q logo, at the bottom, or as the title of the article, but for those with no logo, the plain san serif font is used, and colour scheme of white and red.
This style doesnt particuarly attract a certain type of person, it just doesnt put people off reading it, it is normal. it is a plain style, meaning that no one has a reason disgree with it really. young and old can read it, with no problems, unlike Kerrang which may put some people off due to its appearence.

Kerrang inside

There are 64 pages.
16 of them pages are adverts, which is 25%.
Most of the advertisements seem to be music clothing such as band t-shirts, and upcoming music gigs. Kerrang also advertise their own things in there such as one of their own gigs, joining the ‘Kerrang Klub’, getting a subscription to their magazine and their radio station.
Kerrang have split their magazine up into sections: Feedback, News, Win, Live Reviews, Features, Album Reviews, Gig Guide and The K Quiz.
There are 8 double page spreads. Most of them are for the Features section, which are the cover stories and the main interviews.
There are a couple of advertorials in the magazine. There is one advertising their magazine, saying what’s in next week so that you buy it. There is also an article that is advertising a movie about Green Day, and it is under the title ‘Kerrang Promotions’.

The magazine achieves a unified house style by having similar styles all the way through. At the top corner of most pages, it has the title of the page/section in the same font. Every page in the magazine has either that title at the top, the word Kerrang printed across it, or is a normal advert. Kerrang uses the same fonts for titles the whole way through, bold capital letters, and for really big titles, they have the distressed font as well. Most of the pages use the colour black in the pictures, which makes the pages seem similar as well.
The house style seems appropriate to the target audience since the fonts are very bold and always in capitals, as if it is shouting at you. It seems to be a very ‘loud’ font. The type of music is loud as well, so the font links in with the big powerful type of music that it is talking about. Heavy metal is also seem as ‘dark music’ and using the colour black throughout the magazine supports this view, and targets the rock/metal loving fans even more.

Q cover

On the cover of Q, the main story that is promoted on the cover is the Take That interview. it is said to be a world exclusive, which shows how exclusive it is. There are other stories on the cover, but none have pictures. there is a bold headline on the side for Green Day, a golden sticker looking circle to promote the Q awards, and listing various bands at the bottom of the page.
The cover for Q is much more plain and simple compared to Kerrang. it is a plain white background, the Q in the top left corner, the picture of Take That, and the rest is writing. the only colours on the cover are black, red, gold and white.

The language used tries to promote the quality of the magazine. Everything that is said leads on to continuing reading on inside, like "Word Exclusive" and "Back for good?". the quality of the content is shown to be high, and sticking a gold 'sticker' on it makes it look like its won an award.
The plain white background and red writing makes it similar to NME magazine, but Q shows more quality on the cover. Kerrang is more 'in your face' whereas Q is more about you reading for yourself.

Kerrang cover

The content that is promoted by the coverline is an interview with Paramore and ‘their private photo album revealed’ after a year on tour.
The fonts on the front cover are all bold and in capitals. The main title has a worn out effect and a cracked effect font, and the main headline saying ‘Paramore’ has just the worn out effect. The rest of the fonts are normal and bold. Apart from in the pictures, only 4 colours are used over the whole cover, black, white, red and yellow.

The cover uses simple words and sentences for various parts of the cover. For the main story ‘Paramore’, it simply says “Exclusive! Inside their most successful year ever!” its very simple, with no complicated language or anything, and it seems to suggest behind the scenes story about their tour.
Kerrang seems to be a unique magazine cover style as there are no other music magazines that look like it much at all. Other magazines such as Q and NME are much more plain, less packed. There are magazines such as Metal Hammer, which has a similar looking font, but the cover has a lot less on. Kerrang seems to be the only music magazine that has the cover packed with pictures and stories.

Q cover

At a glance, it is unknown why it is simply called Q, but with research it is to link to cueing a record in a studio. however they didnt want to call it Cue as it could be mixed up to be a snooker magazine.
The masthead is a plain red box with a big white Q in the middle of it, at the top left corner of the cover. the Q is in a plain san serif font, which is a big contrast to Kerrang as it has a fancy font to link to the music. Q doesnt relate to the music.

The main picture is the 5 members of Take That jumping and lying ontop of each other. All of them are wearing black leather jackets with black tshirts. all of them look happy and laughing. some of them are looking straight at the camera, but others are looking past the camera or just to the side.

Unlike Kerrang, there are no other pictures on the cover, making the Take That picture stand out more.

Kerrang cover

It is called Kerrang as it refers to the sound of an electric guitar playing a power chord. This also links into the music genre that it covers, rock/metal.
The masthead for Kerrang is the word Kerrang in a font that appears to be worn away, wih some holes in. the font also has cracks in it, as if it has shattered, also linking in with the guitar powerchord, the loudness of it has shattered the word.
There are two straplines, one going along the top edge and the other at the bottom edge, both advertising more minor stories inside the magazine. the bottom one has a list of bands/artists that are in the issue but doesnt specify why.

The main image is a medium-close up shot of Hayley Williams, the lead singer of Paramore. Her head is tilted sideways and is looking and winknig straight at the camera.
The only other images that are on the front cover are 4 different pictures of the free posters inside, and a couple of small photos to go with the Paramore story.

Q general

Q is published by Bauer Consumer Media.
Unlike Kerrang magazine, Q doesnt appear to be music genre specific. there are varying genres in there that appeal to a much wider range of people. the age range seems to be higher than Kerrang as well, as it seems more formal and plain rather and loud and in your face. the age range is possibly 18-50.
It costs £3.99 which is more than Kerrang, but it produced monthly rather than weekly, meaning that over a month, it is cheaper than 4 issues of Kerrang.
The circulation is reported to be around 89,000.

The title Q is in the top left corner, in a big red square. it is a plain san serif font, which can show how it is more formal and its style. next to the Q is the main cover headline which is also in a san serif font. The main part of the cover however is the main picture. it is the only picture and takes up the whole of the central cover space with the headlines and stories going around the sides and underneath of it. there is also a gold circle that is supposed to resemble an award sticker to try and show quality

Kerrang general

Kerrang magazine is produced by Bauer Consumer Media.
It is aimed primarily at those interested in the rock/metal music genre, who then tend to be male ranging from teenager to adult, such as ages 14-35.
It costs £2.20 which is cheaper than most of its rival magazines.
It is published weekly, unlike other music magazines which are monthly.
The circulation has been reported to be around 43,000

The main title takes up a big strip at the top of the magazine. There are 4 pictures down the left hand side of the page which each show the poster that it says are free inside, since above, it says “free! 4 giant posters”. The main picture of the cover takes up the rest of the page, with the exception of the band title and a couple of pictures over the top.

Music magazine research - Q

Q Magazine

The second magazine I will be comparing Kerrang to will be Q magazine. Q is less genre specific, it covers many genres, ranging from rap/RnB to rock/metal.

Magazine title + Genre

Ive been trying to think up various names that I could use for my music magazine. The genre of music I am basing my magazine on is rock/metal. Rock/metal isn't the most popular genre of music, but it is always there no matter what other genres of music are topping the charts, it never goes out of fashion like other genres. Rock/metal is mostly associated with bands, guitars, drums, being the loudest music around and to do with rebellion. I have come up with 5 names that all link into the genre and I am now in the process of asking others what they think of the names to try and decide on a favorite.

1. Overkill
2. Frantic
3. High Voltage
4. Metal Militia
5. Metalhead

Final cover and contents

This is my final school magazine front cover and contents page.

contents page draft

Here is the first draft of my contents page. I have separated the stories between those on the front cover and all the other stories, and i have put them in two different columns.
I now need to put something in the bottom-left corner as there is a big gap there that needs filling. there are other various things that also need adjusting such as the font layout.

draft 2

This is what i have currently have done so far. I have added headlines in, but i am still unhappy with the main title. the font looks better but it still looks, well, not good enough. I also need to change the issue date. after that it should all be the minor changes to be done.
